Toll Costs in Europe 2026: All Countries Compared
Truck toll costs vary significantly across Europe – from a few cents to over 60 cents per kilometre. For hauliers and dispatchers this comparison is crucial: the choice of route can change transport costs by hundreds of euros.
All prices refer to a 40-tonne tractor-trailer with 5 axles and a Euro 6 engine (CO₂ class 1) – the most common vehicle category in Europe.

The most expensive countries are Austria (≈€0.54/km), Switzerland (≈€0.55/km) and Hungary (≈€0.49/km) – the cheapest are the toll-free countries (Finland, Sweden, the Baltics, the UK) as well as Poland (≈€0.12/km).
The most expensive toll countries in Europe
1. Switzerland – approx. €0.55/km
Switzerland charges one of the most expensive tolls in Europe with its LSVA (performance-related heavy vehicle fee) – it applies by weight across the entire road network, not just motorways. For a 40-tonne truck this adds up to around €0.55/km – significantly more than in Germany. There is also a vignette requirement for vehicles up to 3.5 t.
2. Austria – €0.54/km
Austria is one of the most expensive toll countries in Europe. The GO-Box system (ASFINAG) covers trucks on almost all motorways and expressways. Special toll routes such as the Arlberg Tunnel or the Brenner add extra costs. A 40-tonne truck on the Vienna–Salzburg route (approx. 300 km) pays around €170.
3. Hungary – approx. €0.49/km
Hungary is also in the red zone with its HU-GO system: the e-toll rate for a 40-tonne truck on motorways reaches around €0.49/km – more expensive than Germany. HU-GO is fully electronic and applies to all vehicles over 3.5 t.
4. Germany – €0.35–0.52/km
Germany has become significantly more expensive since the introduction of the CO₂ component in March 2024. The basic rate for a 5-axle Euro 6 truck is €0.348/km; with the CO₂ surcharge (class 1) it rises to up to €0.52/km. The Berlin–Munich route (approx. 600 km) costs about €207.
5. France – approx. €0.30/km
France is particularly complex: the motorway network is split into dozens of concession sections operated by different operators (APRR, ASF, SANEF, SAPN, COFIROUTE and others). On average a 40-tonne truck pays approx. €0.13–0.45/km.
6. Italy – approx. €0.29/km
The Italian concession system (including Autostrade per l'Italia) charges on average around €0.29/km – depending on the section and operator between €0.23 and €0.38/km.
7. Belgium – approx. €0.24/km
The Belgian Viapass system applies to all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes on motorways and major national roads. At around €0.24/km Belgium is in the upper middle range – with relatively short transit distances (small country).
8. Czech Republic – approx. €0.23/km
The Czech toll system (MYTOCZ) covers motorways and selected first-class roads electronically. At approx. €0.23/km the Czech Republic is moderate. On the Berlin–Prague route (approx. 100 km in the Czech Republic) a 40-tonne truck pays around €22.
9. Netherlands – approx. €0.16–0.21/km
The Netherlands has operated a kilometre-based toll system (Vrachtwagenheffing) since July 2026. The rate for heavy trucks (Euro 6, CO₂ class 1) is around €0.20/km – from 1 Sep to 31 Dec 2026 a −22.3% discount applies (approx. €0.16/km), from 1 Jan 2027 +2.6% (approx. €0.21/km). Hamburg–Amsterdam (approx. 165 km of toll road in the Netherlands) costs around €33 (approx. €26 during the discount period).
Middle range: Portugal and Slovenia
Portugal – approx. €0.20/km
Portugal charges around €0.20/km for heavy trucks on motorways via the Via Verde system – moderate, but higher than in Eastern Europe.
Slovenia – approx. €0.24/km
The Slovenian DarsGo system is in the European middle range at approx. €0.24/km – relevant mainly for transit towards Croatia and Greece.
The cheapest toll countries

Finland charges no heavy vehicle toll. Trucks of any size can use the Finnish road network free of charge – no toll fees on motorways or national roads. Finland is thus one of the few European countries without a distance-based truck toll – a significant cost advantage for transport to the north.
Poland – approx. €0.12/km
Poland offers one of the cheapest toll systems in Europe with e-TOLL. Only parts of the motorway network are tolled, the rest is free. On the Berlin–Warsaw route (approx. 460 km in Poland) a 40-tonne truck pays only around €55 – significantly less than in Germany.

Tip: Choosing your route can save hundreds of euros. The Berlin–Warsaw route costs only about a third of the toll of Berlin–Munich despite a similar distance – because Poland has significantly cheaper rates than Germany.
Why the differences are so large
1. Funding model: In Poland the state finances a large share of road construction. In France or Italy private operators have invested billions and amortise them through toll charges.
2. Climate policy: Germany introduced a CO₂ component in 2024 that increased the toll for diesel trucks by up to 50%. Other countries offer emission discounts, but not such a wide spread.
3. Infrastructure density: Countries with a denser, more expensive road network (Austria: many tunnels and mountain routes) factor in higher maintenance costs.
Toll trends
Truck tolls are rising across Europe for two reasons: inflation and climate policy. In Germany, the introduction of the CO₂ toll in 2024 increased the price for Euro 6 trucks by around 65%. Austria and other countries plan similar measures by 2026/2027.
For hauliers this means: accurate toll calculation is no longer a nice-to-have but an economic necessity.
