Truck Toll Hungary: The HU-GO System
Hungary operates one of the most digitalised truck toll systems in Europe with HU-GO (Hungarian: e-útdíj). Since 2013, tolls for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes have been collected fully electronically – no toll plazas, no barriers, no stopping.
Which roads are tolled under HU-GO?
HU-GO is charged on a defined network of more than 7,000 kilometres – considerably more than just motorways. Toll-liable roads include:
- Motorways (M roads): The entire motorway network
- Main roads (főutak): Important national trunk roads
- Expressways and selected bypasses
Especially for transit traffic towards south-eastern Europe, HU-GO is a cost factor on almost any sensible route.
How is the toll calculated?
The calculation is based on four factors:
- Emission category: Vehicles are classified into categories J1 to J5 – the cleaner, the cheaper
- Axles and weight: 2-axle, 3-axle and combinations with 3+ axles have separate rates
- Road category: Motorways are more expensive than main roads
- Kilometres driven: The distance is tracked by GPS
Billing is in Hungarian forints (HUF); if you plan in euros, you need to account for the exchange rate.
How do you pay HU-GO?
- HU-GO app: The official app of the Hungarian customs authority (NAV) serves as a mobile tracking device – suitable for vehicles that drive to Hungary irregularly
- OBU (on-board unit): For regular trips, a permanently installed device is recommended
- Online portal and prepaid sales points: Top up your balance before the trip
Important: Unlike a vignette, HU-GO is billed per kilometre driven. There is no daily or monthly flat rate for trucks.
