Truck Toll Portugal: The Via Verde System

Portugal levies a distance-based toll on around 80% of its motorways. The system works electronically with Via Verde – a transponder that automatically deducts the toll without stopping at toll plazas.

The toll system: Via Verde

Via Verde is Portugal's national toll system. The transponder is attached to the windscreen and communicates with the toll portals. Charging is automatic in euros. Cross-border solutions (incl. Telepass) are available for international fleets.

Which roads are tolled?

  • Motorways (A-roads) – around 80% of the network
  • Former SCUT motorways – previously toll-free routes, now with electronic toll (no barriers)

For international traffic, the A1 (Lisbon–Porto) and the A2 (Lisbon–Algarve) are most important.

Rate structure: axle count

The rate depends on the vehicle category:

Axles Factor
2 axles 1.0
3 axles 1.4
4 axles 1.7
5+ axles 2.0

The base rate is €0.155/km. A 40-tonne articulated lorry with 5 axles pays around €0.31/km – Portugal is in the upper European mid-range.
