Truck Toll Spain: Peajes and Toll-Free Roads
Spain is particularly attractive for truck transport: a large part of the motorway network is toll-free. Only certain concession motorways (peaje motorways) are tolled, mainly in the north and north-west of the country. With the right route choice, large parts of Spain can be driven without any toll costs â or with a clearly calculable amount on a few sections.
Where are tolls charged in Spain?
Tolls are charged exclusively on concession motorways (autopistas de peaje) operated by private companies. The main regions are:
- Galicia and the north-west: AP-9 (FerrolâVigo), AP-53, AP-71
- Catalonia and the east: Selected sections of the AP-7 and AP-2 around Barcelona and Tarragona
- Levante: Individual sections
Many formerly tolled motorways became toll-free between 2018 and 2021 when concessions expired â including large parts of the AP-7 on the Mediterranean coast and the AP-1 between Burgos and the Basque Country.
How is the toll calculated?
The price depends on the vehicle class (trucks pay significantly more than cars) and the distance driven. Collection takes place at classic toll plazas, often with electronic lanes:
- Via-T: The electronic toll system for trucks and cars â a transponder opens the toll lanes automatically
- Credit card or cash at manual lanes
A fully loaded truck on Spanish peaje motorways typically pays about three times the car rate â but only for a few dozen kilometres on the affected sections.
The toll-free alternative: AutovĂas
The real backbone of Spain's long-distance road network is the toll-free AutovĂas (A roads). They are technically comparable to motorways but financed by the state. For route planning this means: with good navigation through the AutovĂas, most of Spain can be driven without any tolls at all.
Discounts and Concessions
Note: Usage-based discounts are the exception in Europe â rates typically depend solely on vehicle data (weight, axles, Euro/COâ class). Where operators do offer discounts, these apply per concession and are subject to specific conditions. Current as of October 2026; the respective operator's terms and conditions are authoritative.
