Truck Toll Calculator for Europe: The Complete Guide
Any haulier or driver crossing Europe faces one unavoidable challenge: toll charges. Different systems, different vehicle categories, constantly changing rates — calculating the total cost is genuinely complex. A reliable truck toll calculator takes care of it for you.
What is a Truck Toll Calculator?
A truck toll calculator automatically computes the road charges for a planned route. Enter your origin, destination and key vehicle details — and get a per-country toll breakdown in seconds.
A good calculator accounts for:
- Route and road type (which countries and motorway sections are covered?)
- Vehicle weight (gross vehicle weight in tonnes)
- Number of axles (2 to 5+)
- Emission class (Euro 0 to Euro 6)
- CO₂ class (relevant in Germany since 2024)
European Toll Systems at a Glance
Europe operates two fundamental toll models:
Distance-Based Toll
Charges are based on the actual distance driven on toll roads. The more kilometres on chargeable roads, the higher the cost. This system is used in Germany, Austria, France, Poland, Czech Republic, Switzerland and many other countries.
Vignette (Time-Based)
Instead of paying per kilometre, you pay a flat fee for a period (e.g. 10 days, 1 month, 1 year). Vignette systems for HGVs are rare — most countries use distance-based charging for heavy vehicles.
Open System vs. Closed System
In a closed system (toll barriers), you pay at the entry and exit of each toll section — typical of France and Italy. In an open system (free-flow), cameras and sensors read your number plate or OBU over gantries, as in Germany and on Austrian motorways. No barriers, no queues.
European Toll Costs: Quick Comparison
| Country | €/km (40t truck, 5 axles, Euro 6) | System |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | €0.35–0.52 | Distance + CO₂ surcharge |
| Austria | €0.57 | Distance-based |
| France | €0.13–0.45 | Distance-based (concessions) |
| Poland | €0.07 | Distance-based |
| Netherlands | €0.20 | Distance-based |
Real-world example: Berlin to Munich (approx. 600 km) costs a 40-tonne, 5-axle, Euro 6 truck around €207 in toll — just in Germany. Hamburg to Vienna (approx. 1,230 km) totals €482 across Germany and Austria combined.
