Truck Toll France: The Péage System
France operates one of the densest toll motorway networks in Europe. The French péage system is distance-based: you only pay on tolled motorway sections, most of which are operated by private concession companies. For truck transport to and through France, tolls are therefore a significant cost factor – and they vary strongly depending on the route.
Who operates the toll roads?
The French state has awarded the construction and operation of most motorways to private concessionaires. The main operators are:
- ASF (Autoroutes du Sud de la France) – South-west, towards Bordeaux, Toulouse, Montpellier
- APRR (Autoroutes Paris-Rhin-Rhône) – East, towards Dijon, Lyon, Geneva
- Sanef – North and east, towards Lille, Strasbourg
- Vinci Autoroutes (incl. Cofiroute, Escota, Arcour) – West and south
Each concession sets its own rates – which is why the cost per kilometre differs noticeably between regions.
How is the toll calculated?
Tolls are collected at barrier toll plazas (closed system): you take a ticket when entering a section and pay at the exit based on the kilometres driven. The price depends on:
- Vehicle class: Trucks over 3.5 tonnes fall into classes 4 or 5 (depending on axles and height)
- Distance driven: Each concession section has its own rate per kilometre
- Payment method: Electronic collection (Liber-t) is slightly cheaper than cash payment
A fully loaded 40-tonne articulated lorry pays on average about €0.13 to €0.45 per kilometre on French motorways, depending on concession and section.
How do trucks pay in France?
- Liber-t: The electronic toll system for trucks and buses. An OBU (on-board unit) opens the toll lanes automatically – no stopping required.
- Credit card or cash at classic toll plazas
- Multi-country services for fleets with a single provider covering several countries
Toll-free alternatives
Not every route in France is tolled. A large part of the national roads (routes nationales) and almost all departmental roads are toll-free. On north–south axes in particular, comparing routes is worthwhile: a detour via toll-free roads costs time but can save substantial toll fees – a classic case for accurate toll calculation before departure.
