Truck Toll Czech Republic: The MYTO System
The Czech Republic operates one of the most technically advanced toll systems in Central Europe. The electronic free-flow system MYTO captures toll-liable vehicles fully automatically via gantries – without barriers, without stopping. The system is operated by the state operator MYTO CZ.
The Toll System in the Czech Republic: MYTO
MYTO (officially: myto.gov.cz) is the national road toll system for commercial vehicles from 3.5 tonnes. It operates on the GNSS/DSRC principle: vehicles can be detected either via a GNSS OBU (satellite-based) or via a microwave transponder (DSRC). The toll is calculated on a per-kilometre basis for driven distance on toll-liable sections.
The system is entirely digital – registration, billing and tariff management are handled via the online portal. There are no physical toll stations. Vehicles without a valid OBU device can alternatively register their route in advance via the MYTO web portal.
Which Roads Are Subject to Tolls?
Toll liability in the Czech Republic applies to two road categories:
- Motorways (D-roads): All Czech motorways are fully subject to tolls. The higher motorway toll rates apply here.
- First-class roads (Silnice I. třídy): Selected first-class national roads are also included in the toll system – at lower rates than on motorways, however.
This two-tier structure is a distinctive feature of the Czech system: drivers who divert onto first-class roads pay less per kilometre, but the route is longer and often slower.
Tariff Structure: Weight, Axles and Emission Class
The toll rate in the Czech Republic depends on three factors:
- Weight class of the vehicle: 3.5–7.5 t, 7.5–12 t and over 12 t
- Number of axles: 2, 3, 4 or 5 and more axles
- Emission index: A combined figure derived from the Euro standard and CO₂ class
As a general rule: the heavier and the fewer axles a vehicle has, the higher the rate. Newer, cleaner vehicles benefit from lower rates.
Special Feature: Emission Index Combines Euro Standard and CO₂ Class
The Czech Republic has developed its own method for taking emissions into account: instead of treating the Euro standard and CO₂ class separately, both values are combined into a single emission index. A Euro 6 vehicle in CO₂ class 1 has a different index than a Euro 6 vehicle in CO₂ class 5 – with correspondingly different rates.
In practice this means: hauliers who have had their vehicles certified for a better CO₂ class automatically pay less toll in the Czech Republic – similar to Germany, but with a different technical implementation.
How Is the Toll Paid?
Billing is in Czech koruna (CZK) and typically runs monthly:
- OBU via GNSS: The on-board unit records the driven route and transmits it automatically. Recommended for vehicles that travel through the Czech Republic regularly.
- Prepaid account: Drivers can top up a credit balance that is consumed automatically.
- Pre-registration: For occasional transits – route, vehicle and payment method are registered in advance via the MYTO portal.
International fleet operators frequently use one of the accredited service providers (e.g. DKV, UTA, Eurotoll), which integrate the Czech toll into their consolidated billing.
Current Toll Rates
Rates are updated regularly. Current rates for all weight classes, axle counts and emission indices can be found directly in the toll rules for the Czech Republic.
