Truck Toll Luxembourg: The Electronic Toll System
Luxembourg introduced a distance-based toll for heavy goods vehicles on 1 January 2021. The small country with its central position in European transit traffic – between Germany, France and Belgium – relies entirely on electronic collection without toll plazas.
Who is subject to the toll?
The Luxembourg truck toll applies to heavy goods vehicles on the entire state road network: motorways and national roads. Cars and light commercial vehicles are exempt.
How is the toll calculated?
The calculation is distance-based per kilometre:
- Emission class: Vehicles with lower emissions pay a lower rate per kilometre
- Distance driven: Every kilometre on toll-liable roads is recorded
Luxembourg is particularly relevant for transit traffic because of its compact size: those driving from Germany to France or Belgium often cross the country in just a few kilometres – the toll therefore stays manageable, but must be recorded correctly.
How is the toll collected?
Collection is fully electronic:
- OBU (on-board unit): An installed device transmits the position automatically
- GPS-based services: Certified providers can handle the tracking for entire fleets
Without a registered tracking device, you face checks and penalties at entry – the toll obligation applies regardless of the vehicle's nationality.
