Anyone planning an HGV journey across Europe needs to know the toll costs before the wheels start turning. This guide walks you through how to calculate toll correctly — manually to understand the logic, and automatically with the right tool.
Step 1: Gather Your Vehicle Data
Toll charges depend directly on your vehicle. Have these figures ready:

Important: The CO₂ class has been relevant in Germany since March 2024. Without proof of a better class, Class 1 (highest surcharge) is applied automatically — even if your vehicle would qualify for a better rating.
Step 2: Plan Your Route
Define your origin, destination and any major stops. The shortest route is not always the cheapest — sometimes a detour pays off if it avoids toll sections.

Step 4: Calculate Toll Per Country

- Look up the correct tariff for your vehicle (weight, axles, emission class)
- Distance × tariff = toll for that country
