Truck Toll Croatia: The HAC System

Croatia is an important transit country on the route to Southeast Europe and Greece. Motorway tolls are distance-based, collected at toll plazas – classic ticket-and-barrier, with electronic ENC devices as an alternative.

The toll system: HAC

The main Croatian motorway operator is HAC (Hrvatske autoceste), with BINA Istra operating the A9/A10 in Istria. The system uses toll plazas (closed system): ticket on entry, payment on exit. Electronic ENC devices are available as an alternative. Charging is in euros.

Which roads are tolled?

  • Motorways (A-roads) – the entire network
  • Some expressways with special rates

National roads are toll-free. For transit traffic towards the Balkans, the A1 (Zagreb–Split) and A3 (towards Serbia) are most relevant.

Rate structure: axle count

The rate depends on the vehicle category:

Axles Factor
2 axles 1.0
3 axles 1.5
4 axles 2.0
5+ axles 2.4

The base rate on motorways is €0.092/km. A 40-tonne articulated lorry with 5 axles therefore pays around €0.22/km – Croatia is one of the cheaper toll countries in Europe.
