Truck Toll Romania: The Rovinieta
Romania does not use distance-based tolling for trucks โ instead it relies on the Rovinieta, a time-based vignette that is mandatory for all vehicles on the Romanian national road network. For truck transport towards the Black Sea or south-eastern Europe, it is a fixed cost item that must be paid before the trip.
Who is subject to the Rovinieta?
The Rovinieta applies to all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes permissible gross weight (and also to cars) on all Romanian national roads and motorways. Foreign trucks must purchase the vignette before entering the country.
How is the price calculated?
The Rovinieta price for trucks depends on three factors:
- Number of axles: Vehicles with more axles pay more (2 axles, 3 axles, 4+ axles)
- Emission class: Euro classes with lower emissions are cheaper
- Duration: Time windows of 10 days, 30 days and 12 months are available
For an articulated lorry with 4+ axles, the 12-month vignette costs several hundred euros โ for occasional trips the cheap 10-day option is often sufficient.

- At border crossings and petrol stations
- Through authorised sales points across Europe
Vignette instead of distance tolling โ what it means
Unlike in Germany or Austria, there is no distance-based truck toll in Romania. Once paid, you can use the entire national road network as often as you like within the chosen period. For cost planning this means: the toll is a fixed, known-in-advance amount โ independent of the distance driven.
