Truck Toll Denmark: The Vejafgifter System
Denmark has introduced a distance-based truck toll system with the Vejafgifter. The system automatically detects commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes via GNSS – no toll plazas, no stopping.
The toll system: Vejafgifter
The Danish truck toll is levied on the entire state road network and works as a free-flow system: a registered GNSS device (OBU) or service provider transmits the kilometres driven automatically. Charging is in Danish kroner (DKK).
Which vehicles are tolled?
All vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of over 3.5 tonnes. The rates distinguish four weight classes:

Rate structure: CO₂ class and weight
The rate depends on two factors:
- CO₂ class (1–5): vehicles with lower emissions pay significantly less.
- Weight class: heavier vehicles pay more per kilometre.
Base rates (DKK/km, without environmental zone surcharge):

Environmental zone surcharges
In larger cities (including Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense), environmental zone surcharges apply – between 0.07 and 0.55 DKK/km depending on CO₂ class.
Special cases: Öresund and Storebælt bridges
The Öresund Bridge (to Sweden) and the Storebælt Bridge are tolled separately – with their own, significantly higher rates per crossing.
