Truck Toll Turkey: The HGS/OGS System
Turkey levies a distance-based toll on its motorway network. For international transport on the corridor towards the Middle East, or as a destination market, understanding the system is important – with 3,000+ km of motorways, Turkey is one of the largest toll countries in Europe.
The toll system: HGS and OGS
Turkish motorway tolls are handled with two electronic systems:
- HGS (Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi): modern system using a stick-on RFID tag on the windscreen
- OGS (Otomatik Geçiş Sistemi): older system with an OBU device
Both systems work without stopping at toll plazas. Charging is in Turkish lira (TRY).
Which roads are tolled?
- Motorways (Otoyol) – the entire network
- Expressways (selected routes)
For international traffic, the O-3 (European route, Edirne–Istanbul) and the O-4/O-5 towards Anatolia are most important.
Rate structure: axle count
The rate depends on the vehicle category:
| Axles | Factor |
|---|---|
| 2 axles | 1.0 |
| 3 axles | 1.4 |
| 4 axles | 1.8 |
| 5+ axles | 2.2 |
The base rate is 4.5 TRY/km on motorways. Important: Due to high inflation, Turkish toll rates are adjusted frequently – always check current values.
